What's New
It has been two months since Mountain Storm fine arts has gone live. In that time, I have added a number of new images to the gallery, but not nearly enough. More to come over the next couple of weeks and then a halt until my February and March travels are over. Most of the work has been on tweaking the web site to better serve MSFA's clients and visitors.
There have been a couple of new additions/changes to the web site:
The new travel page contains links to the occasional travelogues
I write when I travel. I have added a travelogue from a trip to
Tuscany that my wife
and I did in September of 2003. As I get time and have the inclination,
I will add more. Several people have been after me to add one
for the Austria trip I did last September. With luck, I will have
it up in a couple of months.
The travel page also contains links to picture sets that I put up as I travel. If I have Internet access while I am traveling, I try to post some pictures every week, or so. When I do post pictures, I will announce the link via the newsletter mailing list. Right now, there are two picture sets from two of last year's China trips.
Where in the World is Mitch?
I am off to China again this month. I leave on February 12th and return March 2. I will have Internet access on this trip, so I should be able to post some pictures while I am there. Besides my usual stay in Hangzhou, I will be traveling to Guanzhou, in Canton province. Everyone assures me that Canton province has the best food in all of China, and I cannot pass up that sort of a challenge. I also, hopefully, will be doing a trip out into the countryside. I have found the best experiences and, of course, the best pictures, in the little towns and villages where westerners are a rarity.
Ten days after returning from China, I will be off to New York City for a week. Besides a pilgrimage to B and H Photo Video, I will spend a lot of time shooting urbanscapes and being abused by the cabbies.
Look for lots of new pictures in the galleries after I return from these trips and can work my way through the images I bring back.
Picture of the Month
In September, Susan and I did a two week trip to Austria. We stayed in an apartment in Kuchl, about 20 km south of Salzburg. For the first week, the weather cooperated and life was good. The second week was pretty much solid overcast and anything from a light mist, to a drenching downpour. The interesting thing about bad weather is that there can be some really great picture opportunities if you look for them.
This picture is a really good example of that. We were out driving through some small towns doing some sightseeing and we got back to Kuchl fairly early. We had been passing a sign for the past week about a "Night of Fire" in St. Elmo, a small town up in the mountains rising above Kuchl. I had been wondering what was up there, so on impulse I hung a quick right and we began to climb up a series of switchbacks. As we went the road got progressively narrower and the turns sharper. Passing the occasional oncoming car was a real trick.
As we got higher up, we began to pass small, high mountain meadows
where farmers allow their sheep and cows to graze during the summer.
In fact, if you look at the right hand side of the picture, you
will see some sheep grazing in the background. With all the rain,
the meadows were a lush green. In the damp, misty weather, the
colors became really saturated and everything had that quintessential"Sound
of Music" look. I kept stopping about every 100 feet to take more
pictures and of all the images I shot there, this one is my favorite.
