What's New
It has been a busy month, but unfortunately not much photography. That
will change in a week however and I hope to have
lots of pictures over the next couple of months
to share.
I have added two new galleries to the Mountain Storm's web site. Both
showcase on going projects I am working on. One
is around Portals,
which has long been an interest of mine. I find
the window and door treatments that people use
in various countries to be fascinating. The other
gallery, Reflections,
groups pictures I have been shooting dealing with
various reflections, both in architecture and nature.
This originally started out as a project shooting
urban reflections in glass, but on my trip to Moab,
Utah in June, I found reflections on the river
and that got me going not so much in a different
direction, but in an additional direction.
In addition to the new galleries, there are several new pictures on
the web site. Drop by and take a look.
Where in the World is Mitch?
Susan and I head for the coast of Maine on September 30th. Right
now, it looks like we will hit peak color and a lot of rain.
It should make for some great color shots. Rain really saturates
the color and is actually great for Fall shooting. I will also
be looking for a lot of lighthouses to shoot. Oh, and eating
lobster every day. It is the only way to do Maine.
On October 17th, I will be heading back to China for a four
week trip. The next newsletter will probably be written while
I am over there. Susan is joining me at the end of October and
we will be traveling to Xian (the Terra Cotta Warriors) and Beijing.
I will try to post some pictures while I am over there and certainly,
after I am back.
In January, Susan and I will be in San Antonio, Texas. Susan
is attending a conference and I am tagging along to do some shooting.
Buying Fine Art Photography
Buying fine art of any sort over the Internet
always seems to raise concerns with the person doing the buying.
A lot of the nervousness stems from the fact that art is a very
personal thing and buying over the Internet does not allow for
the physical experience of seeing the art on a wall. Questions
around color match, size and style are harder when the experience
is virtual. Most people perceive this as risk.
There are, however, ways to lessen the risk.
Particularly with artists you have not dealt with before, make
sure to talk to the artist before purchasing. Many web sites,
Mountain Storm fine arts include, have contact information giving
you a way to contact the artist directly. Often, if you describe
what you want to do with the art, or the environment that it
will be displayed in, the artist can help you decide if the piece
with fit. I know that the last thing I ever want to do is to
sell an image that is not going to work for the buyer. Not a
good way to keep a satisfied client.
Another thing to look for is the artist's
return policy. At Mountain Storm fine arts, we will take back
any purchase with in 21 days, as long as it is in the original
condition as sold. We will refund the full purchase price, less
the shipping. This allows a buyer to buy the art with the knowledge
that if it doesn't work, it can be returned.
Picture of the Month
Santa Fe, New Mexico is an interesting town. Besides having
great restaurants, shopping and world class art galleries, the
architecture within the city is true New Mexican adobe. By city
code, all structures within the city limits must be adobe and
fit within the same architectural theme. Many of the houses in
town do some truly colorful treatments, with saturated earth
tones and contrasting trim colors.
This month's picture, Santa Fe Door, was shot along one of the
streets in the middle of town. The orange adobe and the turquoise
trim is a common color theme. In the afternoon light, the colors
really stand out and make the photograph.
